Sunday, September 7th, 2008

DIRECTORS and company executives have been warned to seek legal advice before agreeing to speak to officials from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the US investment watchdog.

The warning, issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and the Institute of Directors, comes hours after three British bankers, the NatWest Three, were granted bail by a court in Houston, Texas, where they face up to 20 years in prison for charges related to the collapse of Enron.

Cayman Islands - Internet Outage Outrage

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

A leading client of Cable & Wireless in the Cayman Islands is disgruntled over the service that it is receiving from the telecommunication giant and plans to move on.

TeleCayman said Friday’s six-hour outage on the Maya-1 system operated by Cable & Wireless badly affected its business and could possibly hurt the Island in the future.

Data and Internet customers of TeleCayman were affected, however, voice traffic remained intact because of its redundant path, according to company officials.

Raul Nicholson-Coe, President and Chief Operating Officer of TeleCayman, raised the concern level several notches after complaints from major clients in and out of Cayman.

“We’re extremely concerned about this because Cayman, being a service based economy, it’s imperative that we continue to provide services throughout difficult times,” he said. (To continue this article, please go to http://www.caymannetnews.com/cgi-script/csArticles/articles/000037/003754.htm)

Cayman Islands - Union outcry at jobs overboard

Friday, September 5th, 2008

A DECISION to sack Australian workers on a cargo ship and replace them with overseas labour has been slammed by union heavyweights.

Maritime Union of Australia representatives said yesterday 18 crew members on chemical carrier MT Stolt Australia, which makes regular stops in Hobart to supply the Zinifex zinc smelter, had been given their marching orders in favour of cheaper overseas staff. <p> The ship arrived in Hobart last night, and once it has offloaded its cargo is expected to sail to Indonesia where it will be re-flagged to the Cayman Islands and have its staff replaced. <p> The move has angered union officials who blame federal laws which make it easier for Australian workers to be dumped in favour of their cheaper overseas counterparts. <p> Maritime Union of Australia state branch secretary Mike Wickham said the union had offered operators Stolt-Nielsen a range of options to keep Australia’s last chemical tanker in local hands, but was rejected. Cayman Islands - Investment in Internet better than offices

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

VINCENT Vanderpool-Wallace, Secretary General of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), said many Caribbean countries including the Cayman Islands are getting it wrong in tourism marketing.

The CTO believes they are missing out on a golden opportunity to reach many more people and savings on operations and promotions by not fully utilising the Internet.

Mr Vanderpool-Wallace said Cayman and the other Caribbean destinations could function more effectively without many of their overseas tourist offices.

“This entire revolution - of what has not happened yet for us in the Caribbean - is easy to understand,” he told eTurboNews.

“Think about where people want to put offices related to the cost of establishing themselves at a marketplace. (To continue this article, please go to http://www.caymannetnews.com/cgi-script/csArticles/articles/000035/003549.htm)

Cayman Islands - Hotel executives eyeing bumper season

Monday, September 1st, 2008

HOTELS on Grand Cayman are forecasting that 2007 will be a great year for their business, barring manmade and natural disasters.

The Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA) - the umbrella body for the hoteliers - told Cayman Net News that its members are very satisfied with occupancy levels at the moment.

\Executive Director of CITA Ken Thompson said the response from hotel managers reveals that stay-over tourism is getting stronger and they expected a boom in 2007.

“They’re expecting to do well in 2007 and barring a catastrophe it will be a great year,” he
said.
Using 2004 as the benchmark, the industry officials believe that 2006 is actually a comeback year, given the terror attacks in the US in 2001 and Hurricane Ivan in 2004. (To continue this article, please go to http://www.caymannetnews.com/cgi-script/csArticles/articles/000030/003016.htm)

Cayman Islands - Parvo strain killing dogs

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Dr. Brenda Bush is warning pet owners to be extra vigilant with their dogs and pups in the midst of a serious outbreak of a particular nasty strain of the deadly canine parvovirus.

Although there is usually an outbreak each year, this year has been particularly bad, explained the vet from Island Veterinary Services. Some months this year she has seen as many as 14 dogs die from the disease.

“Since the beginning of the year we’re seeing a lot more cases of parvo than we’ve normally seen in the last several years,” said Dr. Bush.

This year’s particular strain of parvo is deadly, causing pups to die or be euthanized because they are so sick.

If you have a puppy or dog and you have not taken it to the vet for immunisations you are urged to do so as soon as possible. (To continue this article, please go to http://www.caycompass.com/cgi-bin/CFPnews.cgi?ID=1014743)

Cayman Islands - Russian sailor saved at sea

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Vigilant monitoring of the radio airwaves from Cayman Brac resulted in another lost sailor finding safe harbour, this time a Russian scientist on a round the world adventure.

This was the thirty-ninth rescue of vessels in distress coordinated by Lloyds of London Shipping Advisor Raymond Scott, who said he received the call from Professor Maxim Ivanov, alone aboard the sailing vessel, at 11:30 pm Tuesday night, 27 June.

En route from Cienfuegos, Cuba, heading to Jamaica, the engine of the boat had failed and, with low batteries, he had no proper navigation lights. The distress call was “intense” and the signal weak, so Mr Scott assumed he was in serious trouble.

The Russian sailor had left Cuba eleven days earlier and was running low on food and water, living mostly on rice and beans. (To continue this article, please go to http://www.caymannetnews.com/cgi-script/csArticles/articles/000038/003860.htm)
