Cayman Islands News, Articles and Information
I am overwhelmingly relieved to read the recent articles reporting the latest discussions and initiatives to address the problem of Mount Trashmore and waste management in Cayman. As we have read there are a number of modern and green alternatives for waste management and I hope that these are welcomed with open arms by the people of Cayman. We have more reason that most nations to manage our waste given the small size of the island and the strong dependency upon real estate and tourism. I have noted for some time that this newspaper regularly inserts small adverts that read: Recycle, once is not enough. Modern society however, a victim of convenience living, needs recycling to be made easier for them. I am a user of the can recycling skips located at the supermarkets on the island, but so much more needs to be done.
Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI) and its research centre on Little Cayman are entering into a partnership with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through an international project to monitor coral reefs globally. This project is the Integrated Coral Observing Network (ICON), and its partnership with CCMI will provide long-term data sets for Little Cayman that can be compared to all major US coral reef areas, according to information issued by CCMI. It will also provide near real-time feedback on conditions conducive to coral bleaching, as well as other coral reef models, and provide a platform for advanced analysis of the coral reef environment in near real-time. CCMI President, Dr Carrie Manfrino, told Cayman Net News what this partnership means for CCMI and the Little Cayman Research Centre (LCRC).
Ktone, Grand Cayman's information service provider, of SMS messaging to cell phones, has acquired over 150 new users; all students form St. Matthew's University. Ktone worked with the University and Island Air to sign up new and existing students from the university, allowing them to receive information from Government Information Services, regarding Severe Weather/Disaster Information and Crime Watch alerts. With the new St Matthew's students arriving on Island on 1 May for the start of the new semester and the hurricane season underway, Ktone felt it was important for these students to be provided with as much information about the Island as possible. Helping them settle on Island and identify with what is happening around them, while they study here. Helping support Ktone sign up and welcome the new students to the Island, Inter-Island Air Service - Island Air - offered the students the chance to win a day trip to the Sister Island, Little Cayman.

A Washington state discount chain has a simple philosophy when it comes to retailing. Don't pay stupid prices -- shop at Stupid Prices instead. Now the deep-discount chain Stupid Prices is coming to Coral Springs to open its first Florida store. Located at Atlantic Boulevard and Riverside Drive, it is expected to open June 24. The Woodinville, Wash., chain already has 14 stores in California, Washington and Oregon. Stupid Prices offers large discounts on a wide assortment of goods, from Cheerios to chairs to television sets that are discontinued items, seasonal products, display or package-damaged items, products whose packaging has been changed, factory closeouts and customer returns. Like the retailer Tuesday Morning, the offerings change daily and depend on what is available.
These are exciting times for Asian hedge funds. A recent report put together by Hedgeweek on Asian Hedge Funds was full of upbeat statistics compiled by regional based consultants and industry directories. To give a flavour of the progress made by the alternative investment industry in the region, it is estimated that worldwide there are now more than 650 Asia-focused hedge funds with assets under management of close to USD100 billion as at the end of 2005. This represents a five-fold increase in assets under management since 2000 and is to be seen in the context of the alternative investment industry as a whole where assets under management are estimated to be around the USD1.2 trillion mark.... .
