Cayman Islands News, Articles and Information
Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI) and its research centre on Little Cayman are entering into a partnership with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through an international project to monitor coral reefs globally. This project is the Integrated Coral Observing Network (ICON), and its partnership with CCMI will provide long-term data sets for Little Cayman that can be compared to all major US coral reef areas, according to information issued by CCMI. It will also provide near real-time feedback on conditions conducive to coral bleaching, as well as other coral reef models, and provide a platform for advanced analysis of the coral reef environment in near real-time. CCMI President, Dr Carrie Manfrino, told Cayman Net News what this partnership means for CCMI and the Little Cayman Research Centre (LCRC).
CHILDREN aged five to eleven have been given a three-month opportunity to learn about marine life, historic shipwrecks and the Caymanian heritage as part of the Sir Turtle's Sea School. The school will afford the students hands-on activities in arts and crafts projects, treasure hunts and interactive storytelling during their summer holidays at the Boatswain's Beach in Grand Cayman. Organisers of the programme have promised the youngsters and their accompanying parents "the perfect balance of learning and entertainment" from 1 June to 4 September 2006. While at the summer school, the children will be greeted by Cayman's mascot, Sir Turtle, and his swashbuckling friends at one of the Cayman Islands' newest and most exciting attractions. They will learn about the fascinating legends and facts surrounding the shipwrecks of the Islands in the free programme put on by the Department of Tourism (DOT).
THE DIASPORA Conference is over and it is now time to evaluate the achievements of the conference and the plans and programmes to sustain the link between Jamaicans a' yard and abroad. I remember being invited to and attending the first conference held at the University of the West Indies. After the conference, I told the minister responsible that the Church's outlook was being sidelined because the conference's bibliography on Jamaica did not include even one reference on Christianity. I wonder what has changed since then. Jamaica and the leaders within the diaspora foundation can ignore the contribution that the Church could make to their peril. Even before the first government-sponsored Diaspora Conference, Jamaican-born Joel Edwards, general secretary of the U.K. Evangelical Alliance, Europe's largest, richest and most influential evangelical alliance, hosted a multi-sector conference at the Jamaica High Commission in London to fashion a strategy of transatlantic cooperation that could lead to a prosperous and peaceful Jamaica.
The recent news that the Landlord and Tenant law may not be as pro-tenant as some would have liked maybe good news for the property investment sector but it could be bad news for the rest of the economy. As noted in last Friday's edition of Cayman Net News, in both the editorial and the news pages, between the rollover policy and the cost of living too many people are leaving this country. One of the many high costs here is accommodation - and although the Economics and Statistics Office has pointed out that rental rates are beginning to decline, the incredible rise in the cost of accommodation in the wake of Hurricane Ivan in September 2004 means that in many cases rents are still far too high for most regular workers to afford. Moreover, as there has never been regulation within the rental market, landlords are used to getting their own way, which means charging whatever they can get for their properties and then not necessarily meeting their obligations to their tenants when it comes to repairs and renovation.

The Cayman Islands are facing a very uncertain future, if the offshore companies cannot recruit and retain, not only the specialist staff they need, but the support staff as well, they will move their business to another jurisdiction. As has been noted for the longest time now, we therefore do not think that opening our big mouths is going to change too much either. This can and will be the straw that broke the camel's back and even though there is ridicule, disagreement, disgust and among other things, the Government is not about to listen to any advice or complaints because the thing called pride, and to sum it all up stupidity will not allow them to listen. A perfect example is the roundabouts in the Islands. Well, on that one I need to ask a question, "Where is Mr Road Planner's head?" Yes, we have and will see more dramatic situations where there will be more absurd policies, more hemorrhage, and a greater exodus of people from the Cayman Islands and more goodbyes to future developments that may have come to the Islands.

June 7 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. dominated the closely watched J.D. Power & Associates annual survey of automobile quality, bolstering the Japanese carmaker's chances of winning market share from U.S. rivals. Toyota and Lexus vehicles topped more than half the categories in the J.D. Power & Associates Initial Quality Study. Porsche AG vehicles had the fewest problems on average, rising from No. 32 a year earlier. Seoul-based Hyundai Motor Co., which was plagued by quality problems in the 1990s, had its best showing ever at No. 3. among brands. Asian and European brands held the top six spots in rankings that measure each brand's average quality in design and production. Asian automakers claimed a record 40.2 percent share of the U.S. market in May, in part because customers perceive their cars to be better made.
