US newspaper story creating a Caribbean storm

AN article in the Washington Post could become the first "storm" to hit the Cayman Islands and the rest of the Caribbean in the hurricane season, which officially began on 1 June.

Appearing in the 4 June edition is a story headlined "Storm Warning: Choose Your Caribbean Island Wisely" which sought to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of holidaying in the region at this time.

Written by staff writer Gary Lee, the article stated that the cheap low-season hotel discounts are very attractive but they came at a time when "treacherous" weather is predicted.

"At least one study is predicting that the run of storms in 2006 will be as treacherous as last year's record season," he wrote.

There has so far been no response from tourism organisations in the Caribbean on what could possibly be bad press for a region slowly recovering from the fallout from the September 11 terror attacks in the US in 2001, as well as the impact of Hurricane Ivan in September 2004.

Grand Bahama Island in the Bahamas was listed as the one most likely to be hit by a storm, given that it has been struck by 40 hurricanes in the past 150 years for an average of one every four years.

JAMAICA'S largest Christian denomination, the West Indies Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (SDA) will kick

"The West Indies Union celebrates 100 years of growth and development as an organised unit, in service to our Lord and the community, having been formed in 1906, when it comprised all the conferences and missions in the Caribbean and Central America with 4,000 members," said SDA president, Dr Patrick Allen.

"Today, the Union comprising Jamaica, the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, and the Cayman Islands has a membership of over 240,000, making it the largest and fastest growing denomination," he said.
The Turks & Caicos Islands also celebrate 100 years of Adventist presence this year.

The highlight of the weekend will be a Service of Thanksgiving and Praise on Saturday, July 1 at the North Street Church, Kingston, under the theme for the year's celebration "Ebenezer! Hitherto hath the Lord helped us".

New Vaccine Has Ties to Strong

An influential government advisory panel on Thursday recommended that 11- and 12-year-old girls be routinely vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.

Gardasil is the first vaccine specifically designed to prevent cancer. Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration approved the vaccine for females between 9 and 26 years old.

It protects against strains of the human papilloma virus, or HPV, which causes cervical cancer.

Researchers at Strong Hospital played a role in developing the vaccine.

“Initially, in vaccine development at the lab level, we were part of developing the initial part of the vaccine," said Dr. Cynthia Rand. “And now we're also looking at opinions about the vaccine from both the perspective of parents and adolescents."

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices also recommended the shots can be started for girls as young as 9.

Cajun chicken moves south

Bojangles' opened its first restaurant in Mexico this month, hoping to replicate success it's seen in Honduras and more recently China.

But the Charlotte-based company concedes that selling Cajun-style chicken to locals in Asia and Latin America involves a tricky blend of herbs, spices and business alchemy.

The newest franchise in Puebla, Mexico, won't use summer sausage in its breakfast biscuits or jambalaya. That country restricts imports of certain processed meat.

"There are a hundred ways to make sausage," said Eric Newman, Bojangles' executive vice president and general counsel. "It's an art form."

In Puebla, southeast of Mexico City, Bojangles' is using local chorizo, a spicier sausage than the type used in its U.S. restaurants.

Digicel Sights Mobile Content Growth in Caribbean Market

KINGSTON, JAMAICA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- June 30, 2006 -- Digicel, the fastest growing mobile provider in the Caribbean, predicts a growing market for mobile content in the region as penetration of cutting-edge handsets continues to increase among its customers. The company notes that sports content is a key area that taps a cultural common ground throughout a diverse group of countries in the pan-Caribbean region.

As Caribbean nations continue to advance technologically, fans across the region are swiftly beginning to interact with sports content on their mobile phones. A key factor in the adoption is Digicel's ability to roll out state of the art GSM infrastructure from partners such as Ericsson and handset manufacturer KONKA that can support customers growing demand for mobile content.

Eastern districts need more promotion say MLAs

Two Government MLAs want Cabinet to do more than pay lip service to tourism development in the eastern districts of North Side, East End and Bodden Town.

MLA for North Side Hon Edna Moyle and MLA for Bodden Town Osbourne Bodden used the Finance Committee meeting in Parliament last week to whip up support for their constituents.

Mrs Moyle, who is also the Speaker of the House, said she wants more attention paid to Rum Point a rapidly growing tourist area in her constituency.

She said that stay-over visitors who come to Rum Point boast of the area, saying if they knew about it before they would not have gone to the Seven Mile Beach.

We got to move away from the Seven Mile Beach, theres no land left there, she said.

Backbencher Mr Bodden called on Government to bite the bullet in facilitating prospective Caymanian business owners by subsidising them with capital.

Hyatt's Glimmer of Hope

Although the Hyatt beach suites have retained their former glory after Ivan, insurance issues have plagued the re-development of some 230 rooms on the Northside of the resort along Seven Mile Beach.

AN impasse between owners of the Hyatt Regency and its insurers may be heading down the road to a solution, said a resort official.

General Manager of the Hyatt Regency Diego Concha said talks are ongoing between the owners and their insurers with a possible outcome expected shortly.

Mr Concha said at the moment there was nothing to report but hopefully something would come out of the meetings.

He gave no further details on where the meetings were being held and when was a likely date for results.

He said that his company was unsure whether the talks would lead to contentment or disappointment.

Malaysians Celebrate King's Birthday In New York

NEW YORK, June 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysians and their local friends, accompanied by their spouses and children, thronged the banquet hall of the Malaysian Permanent Mission in New York on a warm and bright Saturday to celebrate the 63rd birthday of the Malaysian King, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail. While the men wore traditional Malaysian attire, the women were in colourful dresses to match the light-hearted and fun mood that prevailed at the event. As the afternoon progressed, the event assumed a fiesta-like atmosphere, with children having the time of their lives running around and engaging in fun and games, while their parents and the elders present were locked in conversation, touching on almost everything -- from politics, the pegging of the Ringgit to the dollar to the weather in the east coast.
