Comic Reviews: An icon returns!

Jor-El (Brando) is trying to convince them that the planet will go ka-boom in thirty days or less. Of course no one believes him. The Krypton sequence ends with the planet being destroyed and baby Kal-El loaded up into his crystal spaceship and sent to Earth. In Book 1, that entire sequence is reproduced lovingly for the printed page. And it takes up pretty much the entire book. However, what makes it good is the subtle embellishments the creative team led by Singer made to the entire Kryptonian sequence. Youve got the dialogue from the Donner movie, but the creative team have also added more stuff that heighten the emotional bits of this part of the Superman mythos. While it doesnt hit the emotional punch that the Krypton sequence in Superman: Birthright has, it still provides an excellent foundation for readers to connect with the characters in the upcoming movie.

Lawmakers' vote may cost Nabors

Nabors Industries, an oil driller operating out of Houston, wanted to be considered a Bermuda company for tax purposes but an American company for business purposes. It may regret trying to be both.

The Senate Finance Committee voted unanimously this week to treat as American all companies that made Bermuda or any other tax haven their tax headquarters after March 20, 2002. Nabors completed its Bermuda move three months after that.

CIMA Chairman Reviews Cayman's International Standing,

In a speech to Cayman Islands bankers last week, Mr Timothy Ridley, Chairman of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, compared the jurisdiction's regulatory environment favourably with those of many other locations, both onshore and offshore.

Said Mr Ridley:

'The Cayman Islands made an informed decision some years ago that they wished to be a recognised, accepted and active participant in global financial markets This requires the Islands regulatory regime to meet and to be perceived to meet internationally accepted standards. Equally, it is essential that the Cayman Islands maintain their competitive position in these markets. This requires striking the right balance between appropriate regulation and the free market.'

Although Mr Ridley worried that some international bodies were reluctant to make public their good opinion of Cayman's regulatory structure, in order not to break global ranks, he acknowledged progress towards better international recognition:

'There is also evidence that the Cayman Islands performance is being publicly recognised overseas.

THREE of the four teenagers accused of gang raping an underage girl on New Years Day 2005 have pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated sexual intercourse in company.

The now 18-year-old men, from Goonellabah and Lismore, still face the more serious charge of aggravated sexual assault from the same incident at Lennox Head.

The boys were initially charged over the alleged sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl at 12.50am on January 1, 2005, at Lennox Head as an estimated 16,000 people celebrated in the town.

Another record year for hedge funds

Some 665 hedge funds established a presence in the Cayman Islands in the first five months of 2006, a pace that could put the offshore banking center on track for another record year in registrations in 2006 according to the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority.

As of the end of 2005, there were 7,106 hedge funds registered in the Cayman Islands, far outstripping other offshore tax havens, including the British Virgin Islands at 2,372 funds and Bermuda at 1,182, CIMA said.

Hedge fund managers routinely set up offshore funds in the Caymans and elsewhere to attract international investors who want to avoid being taxed in both their home country and the country into which they invest.

Increasingly, US. pension funds and other institutions invest in U.S.

Just in: Latest JD Power initial quality survey winners and losers

The way in which technology is integrated into new-vehicle design, particularly interior features and controls, is considered by consumers to be as important to quality as are defects and malfunctions, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) released today. The study is in its 20th year.

The Initial Quality Study, which serves as the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership, has been completely redesigned for 2006 to capture problems experienced by owners in two distinct categoriesquality of design and quality of production (defects and malfunctions).

New vehicles today are often packed with new technologies that unfortunately can be complicated and frustrating for the average consumer when their integration is not well executed, said Joe Ivers, executive director of quality and customer satisfaction research for J.D.

Anglicans here support woman as head of US Church

JAMAICAN Anglicans are supportive of their American counterparts who have just smashed centuries-old Anglican tradition in choosing the Rev Katherine Jefferts Schori, the Bishop of Nevada, to head the Episcopal Church in the United States.

Since the election of the first woman head of the US Episcopal Church, as it is called there, questions have been raised about the view of the Anglican Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands on the matter, said the Rt Rev Harold Daniel acting as canonical administrator in the absence of Lord Bishop Alfred Reid who is on leave.

"Persons have asked if the decision in the Episcopal Church will affect Anglicans here," said Daniel. "The Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands is a part of the Church in the Province of the West Indies and has its own mandate to conduct its affairs as determined by its members and the structures of the Church.
