Garbage plagues Grand Cayman

So fast that Communications, Works and Infrastructure Minister Arden McLean has made it his mission to find a solution to the ever–growing garbage issue.

On Grand Cayman, the George Town dump, located very close to the city centre, has been the traditional end of the road for the Island’s solid waste.

However, members of the Finance Committee heard last week that the dump will soon be unable to meet the Island’s waste disposal needs, and that the Cayman Islands is in dire need of a modern waste management system.

Properly constructed landfills and waste–diversion practices such as recycling and composting are commonplace in most parts of the world.

Aside from capacity issues, simply dumping trash leads to harmful chemicals and toxins leaching into the surrounding soil and water, while build–ups of methane gas from decomposing organic matter cause potentially explosive situations.

Little Cayman Airport plans revived: Minister

The development of the airport at Little Cayman will continue under the current administration, and may start this year, according to Tourism Minister, the Hon Charles Clifford, who has responsibility for Cayman Islands Airports Authority (CIAA).

Initial plans for the new runway were approved in August 1999 by the Cayman Brac and Little Cayman Development Control Board (DCB). Approval was appealed by several individuals, but the Appeal Board upheld the decision of the DCB.

In August 2003, then Aviation Minister Gilbert McLean announced at a public meeting on Cayman Brac that the position of the proposed new runway on Little Cayman had been "tweaked south to avoid deep swamp area".

These amendments to the Little Cayman Airport plan, passed in 1999, have not been approved by the DCB, and must be resubmitted to the Planning Department.

99 Essential L.A. Restaurants

What does the Weekly mean by “99 Essential L.A. Restaurants"? It isn't necessarily a list of the very best restaurants in Los Angeles; that would almost certainly include L'Orangerie, which has been the most rigorously French restaurant on the West Coast for decades, as well as Belvedere at the Peninsula Hotel, Noe at the Omni, and too many high-end sushi bars to count, Mori, Shibucho and Wa among them. Nor is it a roster of the most influential restaurants: Valentino, Chinois and Patina are conspicuously absent. It certainly isn't an inventory of the most popular places to eat — we do include Casa Bianca and Pink's, but Langer's Delicatessen is included instead of Junior's and Brent's, and you will find the quirky Mexican cooking of Babita instead of the throng-pleasing cuisine of El Coyote, Marix or Mexico City.

An Address to the Jamaica Hotel & Tourist Association by Hon. ...

I use the term family, because during my tenure as Minister, I have always felt that the interaction among stakeholders in the tourism sector is guided by the principles of mutual respect, fairness and candour V even when we disagreeKwe even manage to enjoy camaraderie while getting on with the business of tackling the thorny issues.

Happily, we can agree today that challenges not withstanding, the sector is in pretty good shape.

The Jamaica Tourist Board team, led by Acting Director Donnie Dawson will share the relevant facts and figures with you in a little while, but I must start by congratulating every one of you for the role you have played in making 2005 the best ever year in terms of visitor arrivals, accompanied by upward movements in several other indicators such as cruise ship arrivals, the number of stopover visitors, total visitor spend, and airlift.

Walkers sees changes in Middle East private equity market

Law firm Walkers said this week that there has been rapid growth in the Middle East private equity market in both the number and size of funds. The firm reports that growth in the market is bolstered by the fact that typical private equity fund structures are consistent with Shari'ah principles of sharing in risks and rewards commensurate with capital contributions, making private equity investments particularly attractive to Islamic investors. "A confluence of factors in the region such as high oil prices, the real estate boom, a marked increase in infrastructure development and privatizations -- as well as the stellar returns for PE from the IPO market over a short history -- could lead to a tripling of the size of the region's private equity industry over the next five years," Rod Palmer, Managing Partner of the Walkers Dubai office, said.

MSP

THE son of a prominent Scottish politician and his two business colleagues yesterday lost the latest round in their fight to avoid extradition to the US over serious fraud charges linked to the collapsed energy giant Enron.
The House of Lords refused to hear an appeal by Gary Mulgrew, a former investment specialist with NatWest Bank, and two colleagues – David Bermingham and Giles Darby – to challenge earlier court rulings allowing them to be extradited to face trial in Houston, Texas.
Mr Mulgrew, 43, whose mother is Trish Godman, the Labour MSP and deputy presiding officer of the Scottish Parliament, faces allegations of serious fraud in the US which surfaced after the Enron collapse. If extradited, he could spend two years in a Texas maximum security jail awaiting trial.
