George Town, Cayman Islands -- "How long have you been here?" someone asked me. I wasn't sure. "What day is it?" I wondered. I felt as though I were floating in the Caribbean Sea outside my bedroom window, which was of such various and brilliant shades of blue that it looked unreal. .
The current weather pattern is having a negative effect on the preparation of Guyana's Under19 rugby team, currently preparing for the North America West Indies Rugby Union's (NAWIRU) Internat-ional Rugby Board World Cup Qualifying tournament which Guyana will host from July 8 to 15. According to Guyana Ruby Football Union (GRFU) president Noel Adonis, the rainy season has left the National Park ground water logged and if it persists the NAWIRU tournament might have to be played at the Guyana Defence Force ground, Camp Ayanganna. This, he said, would mean that the GRFU would have to find additional funding to erect goal posts and scoreboard. Adonis who was at the time addressing members of the media at Olympic House said the union had budgeted $1.3M to host the championship and now with the preparation of the Camp Ayanganna ground, an additional $250,000 or more would be needed.
Q. We are planning a trip to the Netherlands (Amsterdam and nearby towns) and Belgium (Brussels and Bruges). Should we buy rail passes and, if so, where? -- Linda Garb, San Rafael, Calif. A. Whether a pass is worthwhile depends on how many train rides you want to take. The distances you are traveling are fairly short compared with the distances you might be covering in, say, France or Germany. So a round-trip ticket between Brussels and Bruges can cost as little as $44 (second class) and $66 (first class); between Brussels and Antwerp, $30 (second class) and $54 (first class). But a pass is a good way to make sure you can get on any train and not worry about buying each ticket. Consider a Benelux Tourrail Pass for travel in the three Benelux countries -- Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands -- sold by Rail Europe (www.raileurope.com) and available in both classes.

The Cayman Islands are facing a very uncertain future, if the offshore companies cannot recruit and retain, not only the specialist staff they need, but the support staff as well, they will move their business to another jurisdiction. As has been noted for the longest time now, we therefore do not think that opening our big mouths is going to change too much either. This can and will be the straw that broke the camel's back and even though there is ridicule, disagreement, disgust and among other things, the Government is not about to listen to any advice or complaints because the thing called pride, and to sum it all up stupidity will not allow them to listen. A perfect example is the roundabouts in the Islands. Well, on that one I need to ask a question, "Where is Mr Road Planner's head?" Yes, we have and will see more dramatic situations where there will be more absurd policies, more hemorrhage, and a greater exodus of people from the Cayman Islands and more goodbyes to future developments that may have come to the Islands.

The Department of Rehabilitation/Welfare Services is today better equipped for their challenging work because of a comprehensive social study which had been carefully documented and was last week presented to representatives of the Department and the Government of The Bahamas. The 184-page study, "The Phenomenological Essences of the Arrested Male Youths in their Relationships with their Parents " was a March 2006 dissertation by Dr Earl Anthony White, as partial fulfilment for the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As part of the research Dr White, son of Bahamian journalist P. Anthony White, with the cooperation of the Department of Rehabilitation/Welfare Services, last year conducted studies of eight youths, ages raging from 13 to 21 years, most of them residents of the Simpson C.
An incident on Cayman Brac involving a machete attack is not typical for the Island, according to Chief Inspector Reginald Branch, who heads the Brac Police Station. According to a report from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, (RCIPS) a 42-year-old man was taken into police custody following the incident which took place on Monday, 13 June at the Watering Place Park, Cayman Brac. The Park, known locally as "Pop-a-Top", is located on the Beach at Tibbetts Turn on the north side of the Island and is a popular area for Brac residents to socialize. At approximately 6.45 pm the 911 Emergency Communications Centre received a call from a member of the public reporting that a fight had occurred between two men at the public park. Officers attended and found a 32-year-old man had sustained serious injuries from a machete used for cutting wood.
