ABOARD THE FREEDOM OF THE SEAS - Royal Caribbean president Adam Goldstein conceded that the timing of the May 12 launch could have been better. "We actually briefly thought about moving the date," he said of the ceremony in New York marking the debut of the Freedom of the Seas, the world's biggest cruise ship. But Goldstein, chatting candidly in the ship's bustling wine bar, Vintages, said the line decided to shrug off the unfortunate coincidence that May 12 also brought the debut of Poseidon, a major motion picture about a cruise-ship disaster. .
These are exciting times for Asian hedge funds. A recent report put together by Hedgeweek on Asian Hedge Funds was full of upbeat statistics compiled by regional based consultants and industry directories. To give a flavour of the progress made by the alternative investment industry in the region, it is estimated that worldwide there are now more than 650 Asia-focused hedge funds with assets under management of close to USD100 billion as at the end of 2005. This represents a five-fold increase in assets under management since 2000 and is to be seen in the context of the alternative investment industry as a whole where assets under management are estimated to be around the USD1.2 trillion mark.... .
As it celebrates its 30th anniversary, Radio Cayman is counting on the community that it serves to invest its talent and skills in the further development of the national broadcaster. Radio Cayman has been experiencing challenging times when it comes to recruiting skilled Caymanians as broadcasters, despite the availability of funding for media studies. Acting Director of Broadcasting Norma McField said the government-run station has not been able to attract the right number of nationals for the vacant posts. We have received very little responses and most from people who are particularly trained in broadcasting, she said. Were always on the look out for Caymanians who have media training. Were too small to be able to train those who dont have the skills, she said.
Those living in rented accommodation in the Cayman Islands may soon face new Landlord and Tenant legislation that does not give tenants as many rights as may have been expected after the law was first muted. The country's law reform team is now pouring over the Islands' old Landlord and Tenant Laws - based on edicts from the Cabinet and the Attorney General to bring the legislation up to "modern day standards." Going by a section of the first Annual Report of the Law Reform Commission, one of this group's considerations is: "that the pendulum should not swing too far in conferring rights on tenants (as) there is the...concern that this could prove to be a disincentive to letting of property, and thus reduce the available stock of accommodation." In reviewing and reforming the law, the Law Reform Commissioners have said in their first annual report that their task is to strike "a delicate balance" between rights to tenants and rights to landlords.
Many former club members of the defunct Indies Suites say government regulation of timeshare properties is needed to avoid future situations similar to what they faced after Hurricane Ivan. Most of the former timeshare owners of Indies Suites have received their negotiated settlement over the past two months, however many remain angry and disappointed with the way the purchase of their Cayman vacation spot turned out. After a Grand Court decision to liquidate the Indies Suites Ltd. was overturned by the Court of Appeal late last year, the majority of timeshare owners decided to accept a settlement, which amounted to about 20 cents on their invested dollar. None of 16 former club members who responded to questions posed by the Caymanian Compass thought the settlement was fair.
Media Lens - Jonathan Cook - Few readers of a British newspaper would have noticed the story. In the Observer of 25 June, it merited a mere paragraph hidden in the World in brief section, revealing that the previous day a team of Israeli commandos had entered the Gaza Strip to detain two Palestinians Israel claims are members of Hamas. www.medialens.org .
