Filipino Volleyball league kicks off

In spite of some heavy weather earlier in the day, and the threat of more to come, the grand opening of the bMobile Filipino Volleyball League went ahead as planned on Saturday 3 June. The organisers pushed ahead with their preparations, only to have a light drizzle start out just as the teams started arriving. Fortunately it cleared away quickly, and it was on with the festivities.

According to league coordinator Pie Ocampo, this is the best proof he has ever seen of the power of prayer.

Many spectators were however not convinced that the weather would hold, and the turnout was not what the organisers had been hoping for, but there was still a substantial crowd present.

The evening was kicked off with a parade of the teams set to participate in the league.

North Jersey Baseball Player of the Year

Rob Segedin quickly set the bar so high for himself that by late April, the only place he could go was down.

Then again, if finishing the season with a .559 batting average, eight home runs and 39 RBI still is considered tailing off in the last month and a half of the season, well Old Tappan's junior slugger and The Record's North Jersey Baseball Player of the Year, will take that every spring.

Swim officials cop overseas experience

Cayman Swimming benefited from one of the Caribbean's foremost swim officials, who recently spent some time in Cayman sharing his knowledge and teaching swim officiating classes.

Errol Clarke comes from Barbados, and made the trip courtesy of a FINA grant and CIASA. FINA is the world-wide governing body of swimming and CIASA is the national swim association of the Cayman Islands.

Clarke is a member of the ASUA (Amateur Swim Union of the Americas) Technical Committee, and recently returned from officiating at the World Championships in Shanghai. During his time here, Clarke not only taught officiating, but also acted as a VIP observer for the Flowers Sea Swim, not only to enjoy the event, but also to give constructive criticism to improve what has become one of Cayman's prime sporting events.

No Pension Exceptions

On his first visit to the Sister Islands, Pensions Superintendent Cyril Theriault of the National Pensions Office (NPO) said that future trips may take place every three months, based on demand.

Mr Theriault, who spent several days on Cayman Brac with Pensions Inspector Pierre Lautischer last week, reported that there had been several complaints on the Island, but nothing out of the ordinary.

The existence of the NPO is to benefit the employee. However, they are also there to answer all questions from the employers and not just to deal with complaints, he said.

In one situation on the Brac (which they had encountered before), employers and employees on very low wages had come to an agreement that there would be no pension plan.

However, Mr Theriault emphasized that this type of agreement is not legal, even if the Pensions Law is seen as negative by both sides.

Cayman Islands in the Foreign Press

LONDON, England: The Financial Times, June 27, 2006 - The Dubai International Financial Centre has big ambitions, aiming to play host to 20 per cent of the world's investment funds.

It has enacted the collective investment law to provide a legal framework, covering mutual funds, property funds, Islamic funds, hedge funds, and private equity funds.

This put it on a par with other leading onshore fund centres, such as London, New York and Hong Kong, said Sandy Shipton, head of asset management at the DIFC. It was unique, he said, because it was designed to fit the fund industry from a wholesale perspective.

Shipton has his sights set on the alternative fund industry as an obvious target for what the DIFC has to offer.

The industry was fragmented, he said, typically domiciled in the Cayman Islands or a similar tax haven, administered in Dublin or the Channel Islands, with investment management in New York or London.

BUSHITES REACH NEW LOW - dying for lies no longer in disguise

Again, realize, FOX, CNN, and CBC will all in the thousands, receive this information about 9/11's Ahmad, but will refuse to support honorable Police officers, our Humanity's cause for Freedom through Justice, or our beliefs in any religion. They, as murderous sadists, fascists, obstruct Justice for ourselves by refusing to report on the facts of why America continues to fight, dying sacrificed, while censoring your cries for understanding.

Back-office jobs for the Brac?

Leader of Government Business, Hon Kurt Tibbetts, suggested at a public meeting on Cayman Brac that the Cayman Islands Investment Bureau (CIIB) take on the responsibility of coordinating and facilitating the establishment of back-office jobs on the Brac.

The issue was brought up by Sister Islands MLA Moses Kirkconnell at a meeting held at the Aston Rutty Civic Centre and facilitated by CIIB Executive Director Dax Basdeo, to discuss results of the recent CIIB Investment Climate Bureau.

Mr Tibbetts said that the issue of back-office work on Cayman Brac had been talked about for some time, and he had gone as far as to speak to several Government agencies, the Chief Secretary and the Financial Secretary concerning specific tasks that could be done on the Brac.

If there were some agency to put all together the logistics needed to plan for back-office work and, at the same time, to do everything possible to have the young people of the Island know what is happening and know what training they need.

Illegal immigrants untrackable, caught by chance

JAMAICA deports an average of five illegal immigrants per month, immigration officials said Friday, but with no centralised system to track visa issuances and travel permits, the country has no idea how many undocumented foreigners live and work here.

"We are trying to come up with some figure for how many illegal persons we have here," said Leighton Wilson, director of immigration.
