That there needs to be a solution to the landfill dilemma is without a doubt. Not only is the landfill growing taller by the day, no one seems to want to talk about what kind of toxic mess is seeping through it into the ground – and water table – below. In other places in the world, retired landfills are covered with dirt, vented so that the gases created by decomposing matter can escape, and then planted with grass and other flora. Eventually, these landfills become parks. Certainly the future residents of Camana Bay would rather have a view of pretty green hill with a park on it than a ragged brown trash heap. Regardless of the motives of the Dart Group, however, we should recognise how much the offer could help the government and this country. Minister of Infrastructure Arden McLean has talked publicly about the enormous cost of dealing with the landfill.
Playing pioneer in the push for affordable housing was not something EB Developers envisioned for a pricey subdivision planned west of Boynton Beach. New Palm Beach County rules that require limiting some home prices for low- and middle-income buyers did not fit in with plans showing two-story, five-bedroom houses at Osprey Oaks, proposed on the east side of Jog Road about one-quarter mile south of Hypoluxo Road. .
The young woman who admitted carrying a kilo of cocaine from Cayman Brac to Grand Cayman in December 2003 was sentenced last week to five years imprisonment. Topaz General was 19 at the time of the offence. She pleaded guilty and gave evidence at the trial of three other defendants accused of being involved. On 26 May, Magistrate Nova Hall found Christopher O’Connor guilty and sentenced him to 12 years imprisonment. The Crown’s case was that O’Connor, 27, recruited General to go to the Brac and bring the cocaine back to him. On O’Connor’s behalf, Defence Attorney John Furniss gave immediate notice of appeal. The third defendant, Fernando Thompson, was found not guilty. The Crown alleged that Thompson, 25, was the person on the Brac from whom General received the cocaine.
KINGSTON, JAMAICA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- June 30, 2006 -- Digicel, the fastest growing mobile provider in the Caribbean, predicts a growing market for mobile content in the region as penetration of cutting-edge handsets continues to increase among its customers. The company notes that sports content is a key area that taps a cultural common ground throughout a diverse group of countries in the pan-Caribbean region. As Caribbean nations continue to advance technologically, fans across the region are swiftly beginning to interact with sports content on their mobile phones. I read recently an article that appeared in your newspaper concerning a senior citizen who was quite unhappy that her appointment with the doctors at George Town Hospital had been cancelled and no one had thought it fit to inform her as to the reasons for the cancellation. I find this kind of behaviour very appalling but even more so what I find appalling is the lack of facilities for the elderly and/or handicapped in our society. Some of the people who have vacation and/or retirement homes here in the Cayman Islands are the elderly. We also have persons who for one reason or another are handicapped. I am absolutely amazed that the banks and other service providers on the Island do not have a dedicated line for persons with this type of disability. It does not have to be that one has to employ an individual to man the counter for the elderly and/or handicapped, but just a sign that says elderly, pregnant and handicapped persons only. It really breaks my heart when I go into the banks at lunch time and 9 times out of 10 there are only 2 tellers working the counter (during peak hours) and you have elderly persons some with walking sticks standing there patiently awaiting their turn in line.
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- The Dominican Republic will not be ready to join the Central American Free Trade Agreement in July as previously hoped, a U.S. State Department official has said. The Dominican Republic is one of six Latin American signatories to CAFTA-DR, the U.S. free trade agreement approved in 2005. The pact was supposed to take effect Jan. 1, but many countries have had trouble passing the legislation needed to implement various parts of the deal. U.S. officials hope the Dominican Republic can sign on in August, Charles Shapiro, a senior Western Hemisphere specialist at the State Department, said June 7. President Leonel Fernandez told the nation's Congress in February that joining the treaty was "a question of survival" to stay competitive against emerging manufacturers like China.

The Department of Rehabilitation/Welfare Services is today better equipped for their challenging work because of a comprehensive social study which had been carefully documented and was last week presented to representatives of the Department and the Government of The Bahamas. The 184-page study, "The Phenomenological Essences of the Arrested Male Youths in their Relationships with their Parents " was a March 2006 dissertation by Dr Earl Anthony White, as partial fulfilment for the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As part of the research Dr White, son of Bahamian journalist P.
