Cayman Islands News, Articles and Information
AS nationals get ready to observe the second anniversary of one of its most destructive storms, the Met Office disclosed that the Cayman Islands is likely to face a hurricane every year. In September 2004, Hurricane Ivan caused destruction of properties, severe flooding and countless animals died on Grand Cayman - the largest of the three Islands. Three months shy of the anniversary comes word from the Met Office that the Islands could be affected by four hurricanes every five years given the current weather predictions. At a recent disaster preparation workshop in Grand Cayman, the weather experts said that they could not predict for sure if or when a storm would hit any of the Islands. Participants at the recent workshop were introduced to a new storm surge monitoring equipment specifically suited to the low-lying British territory.
June 7 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. dominated the closely watched J.D. Power & Associates annual survey of automobile quality, bolstering the Japanese carmaker's chances of winning market share from U.S. rivals. Toyota and Lexus vehicles topped more than half the categories in the J.D. Power & Associates Initial Quality Study. Porsche AG vehicles had the fewest problems on average, rising from No. 32 a year earlier. Seoul-based Hyundai Motor Co., which was plagued by quality problems in the 1990s, had its best showing ever at No. 3. among brands. Asian and European brands held the top six spots in rankings that measure each brand's average quality in design and production. Asian automakers claimed a record 40.2 percent share of the U.S. market in May, in part because customers perceive their cars to be better made.
Four of the top eight participants from this year's Junior Achievement (JA) Programme in the Cayman Islands are from Cayman Brac. Staci Scott, Geoffrey Grizzel, Cordell Gutierrez and Nickolas DaCosta have qualified for an all-expense paid trip to the Canadian National Junior Achievement Conference (CANJAC), along with the four qualifiers from Grand Cayman and two chaperones. These eight competed for the privilege against over three hundred participants, thirty of whom were in the Brac programme. JA is a non-profit organization that uses hands-on experiences to help young people understand the economics of life. It is a project of the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Central and the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce. On the Brac, it is primarily sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cayman Brac.
The heavens opened and the rain poured down, as thunder cracked the skies. But the opening ceremony for International Museum Day on Cayman Brac carried on regardless. Musicians from the Cayman Brac High School (CBHS) Band and the CBHS Steel Pan Band played on under canopies that provided minimal protection from the slicing rain. Following all the normal prayers and welcomes given to those hardy residents who remained, the two Sister Islands MLAs, Julianna OConnor-Connolly and Moses Kirkconnell offered their remarks and the Leader of Government Business, the Hon Kurt Tibbetts gave the main address. As the opening ceremony came to a close, and the celebrations officially began, the rain finally stopped. International Museum Day has been celebrated all over the world since 1977 on or close to 18 May.
The world's largest luxury liner -- taller than the Statue of Liberty and longer than an aircraft carrier -- will sail out of Miami today on her maiden voyage to the western Caribbean. She sets a new standard for big. The latest fleet addition for Royal Caribbean International, Freedom comes in at 160,000 gross registered tons and is capable of carrying 4,375 passengers. But it won't hold the record for very long. As cruise lines seek to maximize their profits amid a weakening Caribbean cruise market, they want to attract people whose idea of a vacation is more than betting on bingo and bellying up to the buffet. The bigger the ship, the more restaurants, entertainment and other amenities it's likely to have. And Freedom has its share on its 15 decks, including a wave pool that simulates surfing and a boxing ring in the largest-ever cruise ship gym.
In an interview in a year 2000 Issue of the Britannia Magazine, Dr. Philip Pedley (then the Director of the National Archive) said, "there seemed to be a general feeling in the 1970's, as development began to pick up, that in order to move forward, you had to forget the past - the past could be a kind of a hindrance. In the 1980's, however, there was a feeling that things had been moving too fast and that there was a need to stand back and to take stock" It is very interesting, and instructive, that in the year 2006 we are still trying to come to grips, in Vision 2008 Strategic Plan and otherwise, on how to enhance the cultural identity of these Islands. Intentions are all fine and good, but it is the translation of those intentions into concrete items - that can make the difference between becoming a vibrant and sustaining culture, or falling behind in an ever-changing world and ceasing to be a player at all.
IF all goes well and according to plan Grand Cayman could have a farmer/vendor market this October in Lower Valley, according to the Cayman Islands Agricultural Society. President of the Agricultural Society Errol Watler said Government and his organisation are fine-tuning plans to have the market ready in three to four months. "We're undertaking a three-prong approach in making the market a success for the farmers and vendors," he said. Mr Watler explained that the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Society have been collaborating to give the Island its first full time market. "We have to get on our feet and move forward for Cayman agriculture to improve," he told a meeting of the society at the Stacy Watler Pavilion in Lower Valley on Monday 19 June.
Again, realize, FOX, CNN, and CBC will all in the thousands, receive this information about 9/11's Ahmad, but will refuse to support honorable Police officers, our Humanity's cause for Freedom through Justice, or our beliefs in any religion.
