As was documented in Sunday's edition of The Sun News, Smith had a nightmarish first-hand experience with a boating accident on May 17 when Super Suds II capsized while returning from a Gulf Stream trolling trip out of Murrells Inlet. Smith is a true hero for helping four of the seven men aboard survive. The 12-year first mate for the late Capt. Bob Clarke aboard Super Suds II calmed the four West Virginia residents, then repeatedly dove below the overturned boat to retrieve life jackets and the anchor rope. Smith gave the men the life jackets and rigged the rope as a means for all five to stay on the slick bottom of the boat. Give Clarke credit for saving the fifth passenger's life when the pair drifted away from the boat after all seven men were washed off by a wave.
The rollover policy is offering a very positive opportunity for one local firm, which is ready to cash in on the expertise that the seven-year work permit limit is forcing out of the country. After many years of wooing professionals into the Cayman Islands to fill high-level financial positions, as the brain-drain starts here in the Cayman Islands, BrightStaff is now offering those who were once employed in high level posts here, opportunities in similar positions overseas in competitive jurisdictions to the Cayman Islands. One of the leading recruitment agencies in Cayman, BrightStaff has found employment for hundreds of professionals from all over the world. With changes to the Immigration Laws, work permit holders and their families are finding it difficult to make long-term plans to reside indefinitely in the Cayman Islands and BrightStaff said in a press release that it was expanding its services for financial professionals who are leaving the Island as a result of the seven-year rollover policy.
In 1920, artist and illustrator Wilmot Emerton Heitland built a French country farmhouse on the Five Mile River in Darien. He was living in an old farmhouse with an attached studio in Noroton Heights. He purchased the land for his new home, a rocky point covered with trees, from a local fisherman. Born in Superior, Wis., Heitland first studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. At 20, he won the Cresson traveling scholarship and went off to the Academie Colarossi in Paris, attended by artists such as Amedeo Modigliani, Norman Rockwell and sculptor Jacques Lipschitz. Heitland also attended classes at the Art Students League of New York. His first illustrations were published by Collier's Weekly in 1922. In the Art Deco style, they succeeded the Art Nouveau works of an earlier Colarrosi student, Alphonse Mucha.
CIBC announced on Thursday that it has reached a definitive agreement with Barclays Bank PLC to acquire its 43.7% ownership stake in FirstCaribbean International Bank. As previously announced, CIBC will pay US$1.62 for each FirstCaribbean share for a total price of approximately US$1.08 billion. This transaction, which is conditional upon regulatory approvals, is expected to close by the end of 2006. Once it is completed, CIBC will own 87.4% of FirstCaribbean, with the remaining shares held by regional investors. Under the definitive agreement, CIBC has the option of paying for the transaction in cash, CIBC common shares or a combination of cash and shares, the relative proportions of which CIBC will determine before completion. Barclays would not intend to be a long-term holder of any CIBC shares it may receive in connection with this transaction.
