Radio Cayman Staff Woes

As it celebrates its 30th anniversary, Radio Cayman is counting on the community that it serves to invest its talent and skills in the further development of the national broadcaster.

Radio Cayman has been experiencing challenging times when it comes to recruiting skilled Caymanians as broadcasters, despite the availability of funding for media studies.

Acting Director of Broadcasting Norma McField said the government-run station has not been able to attract the right number of nationals for the vacant posts.

We have received very little responses and most from people who are particularly trained in broadcasting, she said.

Were always on the look out for Caymanians who have media training. Were too small to be able to train those who dont have the skills, she said.

What you can catch from the waves

It's a postcard-perfect day in Malibu. Multimillion-dollar mansions dot the green hills and seagulls glide in the cloudless sky. Surfrider beach, made famous by "Baywatch" and the Beach Boys, is packed with golden sunbathers and families lounging under bright umbrellas. In the water are hundreds of frolicking swimmers ... and billions of fecal microbes. P>

A sign partially hidden by a surfboard warns that swimming amid the bacteria, which comes from pollution flowing through the town's storm drains, may cause illness. "Some people don't know," says lifeguard Greg Pfeifer, pointing from atop his white stand at the bobbing heads in the water. "A lot of people just don't pay attention."

This summer, beachgoers risk such things as shark attacks in Florida, rip tides in Oregon and stinging jellyfish in South Carolina.

Toyota Motor Leads J.D. Power's 2006 Quality Survey (Correct)

(Corrects Nissan rank and spelling of Infiniti in 22nd paragraph, spelling of Oshawa in final paragraph.)

June 7 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. dominated the closely watched J.D. Power & Associates annual survey of automobile quality, bolstering the Japanese carmaker's chances of winning market share from U.S. rivals.

Toyota and Lexus vehicles topped more than half the categories in the J.D. Power & Associates Initial Quality Study. Porsche AG vehicles had the fewest problems on average, rising from No. 32 a year earlier. Seoul-based Hyundai Motor Co., which was plagued by quality problems in the 1990s, had its best showing ever at No. 3. among brands.

Asian and European brands held the top six spots in rankings that measure each brand's average quality in design and production.

New Steel Pans for CBHS

Twenty-two new steel pans have been donated by Kent Rankin and Paramount Carpets to the Cayman Brac High School (CBHS). The donation includes two sets of basses, a cello, guitar pans, a double second and four tenors.

"They're in tune and sound lovely," said CBHS Music Teacher Penny Thompson, adding, "We have lots of hugely enthusiastic pan players in the school."

There are five groups of pan players in the school - two in Year 7, one each in Years 8 and 9, and one senior group. She puts their popularity down to the type of music they play - generally Caribbean - and because it is not too difficult to reach performing standards.

"And they're fun!" said Ms Thompson, noting that, between the groups and individual musicians, they won a collection of bronze, silver and gold awards at this year's National Children's Festival of the Arts.

Paralyzed skier sees marathon as opportunity to return a favor

Dave Farrell's goal of completing his first marathon this fall isn't a personal quest, but rather a gift.

Farrell, who severed his spinal cord in a telemarking accident on Aspen Mountain in late January 2005, wants to give back to the organization that helped him regain his athletic outdoor lifestyle. Less than a year after his accident, which left him paralyzed from his chest down, local nonprofit Challenge Aspen had Farrell back on the mountain in a sit-ski.

Before this season ended, Farrell had skied 21 days. When he heard about the marathon that locals run every fall to raise money for the nonprofit, Farrell knew immediately he wanted to participate.

"I knew I wanted to do something for them," Farrell said of Challenge Aspen, which provides recreational experiences for those with mental or physical disabilities.

Bodden Town claims Under 14 FA Cup

The powerhouse Bodden Town Under 14 team successfully defended their Under 14 FA Cup title on Sunday 21 May, continuing a run of dominant form that has seen the team lead the Queensgate Youth League all through the season as well.

Bodden Town took on surprise FA Cup finalists Cayman Brac FC, who progressed to the final by defeating one of the title favourites, George Town SC, in a penalty shootout.

Cayman Bracs appearance in the finals was certainly historic, and validated the faith that their coach Mitchum Sanford had placed in his team. It is also proof that Cayman Bracs participation in sporting leagues on Grand Cayman is both possible and desirable, as they are able to compete with, and defeat, the very best that Grand Cayman has to offer.

The two teams certainly presented a spectacle out on the Annex pitch, which had been specially re-marked with additional yellow lines to more closely match the smaller pitches the Under 14 players are used to playing on.
