Awaiting the judgment on low speed vehicles

I have recently completed the building of a little cottage on Little Cayman-and of course my only transportation is an electric vehicle which is locked up in my utility room.

My house is about six miles from the grocery store.

I greatly appreciated your recent article about electric vehicles and look forward to your follow up.

Electric vehicles would be ideal for Little Cayman and I've met a surprising number of other people on Little Cayman who find this evolution in the law of great personal importance.

Maybe you could nudge the officials to move a bit more quickly on this issue? - Thanking you

Lucy Barker

Editors Note: Starting on page one is the latest update on the position with these vehicles. Sadly the news is still not good for owners.

PPM and UDP join forces on waste and water

Honourable Arden McLean, Minister of Communications, Works and Infrastructure, has invited Opposition Party Members Cline Glidden and Rolston Anglin, to work with him on a fact-finding overseas trip regarding waste management and electricity generation.

Speaking with Cayman Net News on Wednesday 14 June 2006 Mr McLean confirmed the upcoming research exercise - scheduled to start on 18 June 2006.

Mr McLean confirmed that a team would be headed to Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States, to look at "waste-to-energy plants, because we have not seen these things in operation."

News of this trip is one indication that the Minister is already settling down to work on the $1.2 million capital project expenditure for the purchase of equipment to improve the collection and disposal of solid waste in Cayman.

UAE becomes top investor in Saudi Arabia

Abu Dhabi: With the signing of the 100-billion riyal deal with Emaar for the King Abdullah City in Jeddah, the UAE overtook Japan to become the top foreign investor in Saudi Arabia, according to statistics released by the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (Sagia).

UAE investments approved by Sagia till May stood at 122.9 billion riyals, accounting for nearly 41 per cent of the total FDI pumped into the kingdom, the figures showed.

The Emaar agreement encouraged several other projects from the UAE, which boosted the country's dominance in Saudi Arabia's FDI arena.

Ten major countries investing in Saudi Arabia include the UAE, Japan, British Virgin Islands, Bahrain, France, Germany, Lebanon, Cayman Island, Canada and Bermuda.

Sagia, which was founded as part of Saudi Arabia's economic diversification programme, has licensed 3,608 projects valued at 292.657 billion riyals.

Freedom of the Seas leaves others in its wake with amenities

ABOARD THE FREEDOM OF THE SEAS - Royal Caribbean president Adam Goldstein conceded that the timing of the May 12 launch could have been better.

"We actually briefly thought about moving the date," he said of the ceremony in New York marking the debut of the Freedom of the Seas, the world's biggest cruise ship.

But Goldstein, chatting candidly in the ship's bustling wine bar, Vintages, said the line decided to shrug off the unfortunate coincidence that May 12 also brought the debut of Poseidon, a major motion picture about a cruise-ship disaster. .

Cayman liquidators spread to BVI

RSM Cayman Islands has expanded its Corporate Advisory Services practice to the British Virgin Islands. The new firm, RSM (British Virgin Islands) Limited will be led by Christopher Stride, a partner of RSM Cayman Islands.

Mr. Stride was instrumental in establishing RSM Cayman Islands in 2002 and will continue to play an ongoing role in the Cayman Islands practice.

In recent years, the British Virgin Islands have taken steps to formalize the insolvency process. In August of 2004 the British Virgin Islands enacted the Insolvency Act 2003 which provided a regime for dealing with insolvent companies and the supervision of insolvency practitioners.

The impact of the legislation has lead to many major law firms and accounting firms setting up a presence in BVI over the past three years.

Given the similarity of the legal framework, and the large number of corporate vehicles domiciled in the BVI, the jurisdiction was deemed as favourable to expand the services that are currently offered in the Cayman Islands.
