Jane's World of Craft

After many years of faithful service in the Cayman Islands Postal Service, Jane Webster decided to keep busy during her retirement, by making marvelously imaginative craft ornaments.

The range of her work is as wide as her imagination, and Ms Webster makes virtually anything out of virtually anything.

"I started in Summer 2002. I was operating a pre-school and during the summer some of the parents asked me if I could take some older children during the summer vacation. I had to find something for them to do, so I went to the craft store and bought some craft materials.

"When it was time for them to go back to school, at the end of the summer, I thought it was time to do something myself.

"The first thing I did was a bunch of grapes out of purple beads; I said to myself: 'This looks good,' and tried to do some more.

Toyota Motor Leads J.D. Power's 2006 Quality Survey (Update5)

June 7 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. dominated the closely watched J.D. Power & Associates annual survey of automobile quality, bolstering the Japanese carmaker's chances of winning market share from U.S. rivals.

Toyota and Lexus vehicles topped more than half the categories in the J.D. Power & Associates Initial Quality Study. Porsche AG vehicles had the fewest problems on average, rising from No. 32 a year earlier. Seoul-based Hyundai Motor Co., which was plagued by quality problems in the 1990s, had its best showing ever at No. 3. among brands.

Asian and European brands held the top six spots in rankings that measure each brand's average quality in design and production. Asian automakers claimed a record 40.2 percent share of the U.S. market in May, in part because customers perceive their cars to be better made.

Keep Cycle Safety in Mind

It's motorcycle season in Rochester. Bikes are becoming more and more popular and with that popularity come an increase in accidents and injuries. Long-time riders say car drivers are the biggest obstacle to rider safety.

"Other cars are probably the main obstacle. Sometimes drivers just don't see you. They don't see you in the blind spot. They are not looking, not paying attention. Messing with their cell phone, whatever it might be. You are the one who has to be aware and watch out for everyone else in order to be safe," said Mark Cenzi, general manager for Cenzi Motorcycle Company.

Other tips to follow: get the proper training, wear protective safety gear, such as a helmet, along with a face shield or sunglasses. Ride legally with certification and know your limits. Never use alcohol or other drugs while riding.

Bluff Shelters Planned

Several projects on the Bluff will eventually add hurricane shelter space on Cayman Brac, but none are ready for the start of this hurricane season.

According to Deputy District Commissioner Ernie Scott, the Day Care Centre next to the Aston Rutty Civic Centre (ARCC) will hopefully be finished in September, and the canopy at the entrance to the civic centre should be ready this weekend.

Quality Construction was awarded the contracts for both these projects. Mr Scott was confident the canopy would be completed in time for the Cayman Brac High School Graduation Ceremony on 24 June.

This addition, for pick-up and drop-off at the centre to protect people from the elements, both rain and sun, was made with both general and hurricane shelter use in mind, he said.
