Ocean to Sound Relay Hits the Massapequas

Runners from all over the New York Metropolitan area and beyond are cordially invited to put together teams to participate in the 21st annual Ocean to Sound Relay, on Sunday, Sept. 10.

The Relay brings the entire Long Island region together in an annual September tradition, with 150 teams of eight runners each traversing a 50- mile course that starts at 8 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, heads north and east through Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa, Farmingdale and Old Bethpage before crossing into Huntington, hitting the Long Island Sound at Lloyd Harbor, returning to Nassau County via Cold Spring Harbor and Syosset, and then heading north again to a dramatic finish on the grounds of Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay.

Each runner on the team runs a leg of between five and seven miles.

Cleaning up one of Cayman's beauty spots

The dms Organization joined forces with the National Trust, on Friday 16 June, to clean Barkers Beach in West Bay, with the aim of restoring the beach to its natural beauty.

Volunteers were all armed with gloves and black plastic bin liners from the dms van.

Don Seymour, President of dms Organisation Ltd said he was pleased that dms Organisation is getting involved in assisting the National Trust in beautifying a small part of Grand Cayman's natural environment.

"I feel it is essential that local businesses and the community take responsibility for what we have and help preserve Cayman's assets for the future," he added.

Cindy Adam, Education and Development Specialist for the National Trust offered thanks to dms for their support in helping to clean up the area.

We are not headed in the right direction

Cayman has paid a $376 million price for the PPM and UDP parties in four short years. Political parties have wrecked the other Caribbean Islands because of their near absolute power and Cayman will be the same if the parties are left unchecked.

And political parties will continue to do so because of non-governmental knowledge. We believe it is harsh and not very conscionable to inflict taxes especially on the poorer Caymanians indirectly who are now trying to recover from Hurricane Ivan to justify a $32.5 million surplus, but again that is only our opinion. Where do we get off passing our opinions in the running of a non-sense Government in these days? Well, not very far, do we?

There are few independents views mainly the partys view which may be heavily influenced by party members who are not elected legislators and who the public never voted in and apparently has a lot of influence in the running of the government.

Converging Cultures in Cayman (part II)

In an interview in a year 2000 Issue of the Britannia Magazine, Dr. Philip Pedley (then the Director of the National Archive) said, "there seemed to be a general feeling in the 1970's, as development began to pick up, that in order to move forward, you had to forget the past - the past could be a kind of a hindrance. In the 1980's, however, there was a feeling that things had been moving too fast and that there was a need to stand back and to take stock"

It is very interesting, and instructive, that in the year 2006 we are still trying to come to grips, in Vision 2008 Strategic Plan and otherwise, on how to enhance the cultural identity of these Islands. Intentions are all fine and good, but it is the translation of those intentions into concrete items - that can make the difference between becoming a vibrant and sustaining culture, or falling behind in an ever-changing world and ceasing to be a player at all.

Rivera Says He's Not Boston-Bound

Tuesday was a day of damage control for Rochester's school superintendent. The Boston Globe ran an article naming Manuel Rivera as a candidate for Boston's school chief. Rivera responded by saying the Globe article contained a lot of misinformation and, more to the point, he is not going anywhere.

Citing several unnamed sources "close to the search", the Globe named Manuel Rivera and four others as candidates to replace outgoing Boston public school superintendent Thomas w. Payzant, who is retiring.

"I did not apply to be the superintendent of the Boston public schools," Rivera said Tuesday, “and I am not a finalist for that particular position. There'd been numerous times when a consultant had reached out to me to consider it and I said, very clearly, that I would not."

Rivera said he told a Globe reporter who called for comment just that Monday night, but the paper opted to go with its story anyway.

Banks face new challenges

As the cornerstone of the financial sector in the Cayman Islands, the banking sector faces growing international regulation, more competition from other jurisdictions, a shortage of qualified personnel, higher customer service demands, as well as the implementation of the new seven-year work permit limits, under the Immigration Law, (2003).

Numerous industry experts addressed the challenges and opportunities the banking industry faces at the recent Cayman Islands Bankers Conference at The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman last week.

The Chairman of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA), Timothy Ridley discussed the current international developments such as Basel II, the Financial Stability Forum, the Financial Action Task Force, International Monetary Fund and their implications for the Cayman Islands.

It is also a marvelous trove of opinions and ratings submitted by people who have been-there-done-that and are willing to share their recommendations with others. The new website BestofCayman.com launched by owner Carrie Layne, whose Internet marketing background includes a stint with popular citysearch.com, mall.com, and hoovers.com is geared towards helping potential visitors discover the Grand Cayman Islands through the eyes of those who have stayed here before and wish to pass on their knowledge.
